A day of birdcalls and pungent earthy scents. I researched the $4 per night campsites along the backpacking loop at Raccoon Creek. Note to future self: at the Pioneer backpacking campground, only site #1 is acceptable...and it's not great. At the Sioux backpacking campground, only sites #4 and #5 are good, but you have to reserve them both so that you don't have any neighbors.
Not that there will be any other backpackers camping out there anyway...unless it's a three-day weekend. If you wanted to do some cheap and primitive camping without actually walking a 19-mile loop, you could reserve one of the Sioux backpacker sites, park your car at the Palomino Trail lot, and walk the short distance to your site.
